Things are getting a bit more awkward for Rep. Steve Scalise, the number three Republican in the House of Representatives, following Monday's
revelation that he spoke at a white supremacist rally sponsored by David Duke, a former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. Because while Scalise is claiming he had no idea who he was talking to that day in 2002, Duke is
telling a different story:
Former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke said late Monday that his longtime political adviser, Kenny Knight, was “friendly” with House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) in 2002, and cited that relationship as the reason Scalise accepted an invitation that year to speak at a gathering of white supremacists.
Oops.
But forget all that because it's not like white supremacists were the worst group Scalise had ever addressed:
Scalise also equated his appearance before the white supremacist forum with one before the League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan group known for helping to register new voters.
"I spoke to the League of Women Voters, a pretty liberal group. ... I still went and spoke to them. I spoke to any group that called, and there were a lot of groups calling," he said.
Discuss.
