I've read some more diaries about how unemployment is at its lowest rate in years at 5.6%. Well goody. The unemployment rate for disabled people was 13 and a half percent in 2013, and I'm sure that hasn't changed much since then and I highly doubt we'll see any real changes in my lifetime.
It's part of the reason I simply gave up the fight for employment in the first place. It's not worth all the time and money (Yeah, you read that right.) put in to be trained for a job you can actually do and yet not be able to find any leads FOR that job because the nation's economy is so openly hostile to disabled people except for when it's fucking convenient. You know, like when the executives wanna stuff extra money in their pockets after winning some trophy for employing a person like me.
Now I know some of you are going to tell me "But Homer, your mad rantings and ravings don't really contribute to the conversation. Shut up." And you know what, you're right. I suck at conversation. In fact, I hate talking in general. It only ever gets me in trouble because I like to say what I'm actually thinking. Like when I tell people to take their bullshit jobs numbers and shove them because they won't mean jack shit in a few years with our 'Take What You Want and Get The Fuck Out' economy.
As for the American Dream....well, anyone who has had 2 brain cells to rub together knows full well it's all a lie to begin with, but we've never had a chance to even live the lie. Even that is denied to us at the start. Some of us might get Social Security, but that's just a pittance that'll be made worse by the Republican Terrorist Movement and their Wannabe Republican allies like Libertarians and many Democrats nowadays, save for maybe one or two of them at best, like Warren.
So I have nothing to contribute to a conversation? That's okay. Employers don't think I have anything to contribute to companies either. Interview after interview, the hiring managers always want 'more'. More education, more experience, a drivers' license, a car, etc. And they want all this shit for what will no doubt be mostly busy work.
Like I said in an earlier comment in another diary: If you don't think that we're being denied any access to real employment or any shot at the American Dream, you're either not disabled or have no disabled family members, or you're just not paying attention.
See you around,
Homer
