This is the beginning of the MLK weekend in Oakland, with a large number of activities planned to the theme of reclaiming Martin Luther King's legacy of civil disobedience and non-violent direct action. The hashtags for the weekend's actions are #ShutItDown #ReclaimMLK #96Hours #MLKShutItDown #BlackLivesMatter #BartFriday.
A Google calendar of publicized events is available.
The first (unpublicized) action began about 6:30 AM this morning, as a group chained themselves and blockaded the Federal Building in downtown Oakland.
The most spoken-about action was a call to show up inside the Montgomery BART Station in downtown San Francisco at 7:00 AM and "bring a spoon." This phrasing attracted all sorts of attention, from musings that it was just a publicity stunt to whispered theories of a terrorist threat by spoon.
