In dealing with John Boehner and Benjamin Netanyahu you are dealing with a combination of backroom political thugs and gangsters. So, if you want to draw the line and beat these guys, you have to do conjure up the wisdom of Jim Malone (Sean Connery):"They pull a knife, you pull a gun. He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue. That’s the Chicago way!"
In this case, what you pull is simple, and quite less violent: Democrats should simply not attend Netanyahu's political act.
Let's be clear: Republicans are inserting themselves into the Israeli elections set for March 17th by giving Netanyahu a platform two weeks before. Nancy Pelosi is correct:
"If that's the purpose of Prime Minister Netanyahu's visit two weeks before his own election, right in the midst of our negotiations, I just don't think it's appropriate and helpful," Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., told reporters Thursday at her weekly press conference. The March 3 speech, Pelosi suggested, could give Netanyahu a political boost in elections a few weeks later and inflame international talks aimed at stopping Iran's nuclear program.
Democrats can issue press releases until the cows come homes. The only way to make this hurt is to simply not attend.
Boycott the speech--and let Republicans either have Netanyahu speak to a half empty chamber or move the speech to say a sports bar down the street.
Yes, the Democratic Party is full of defenders of the occupation. However, this is pretty easy to explain: Pelosi et. al. simply make it clear that the party won't let political considerations disrespect the president and make a mockery of the most basic conventions of diplomatic protocol.
