Visions have been, and still are, an important part of American Indian spirituality. Apache medicine man Daslahdn experienced a vision in 1903 and as a result introduced a new dance and proclaimed a prophecy. This prophecy, explained in the words of another medicine man, proclaimed:
“You will be raised up from the earth in a cloud, and while you are gone the earth will be changed. Then you will be lowered on to it again and it will be all ready for you.”
The new religious movement is known as daagodighá and those who follow it often wear a cross-and-crescent motif.
In 1906 Daslahdn had his followers cut off his head as a way of showing that he could return from the dead. After three days he failed to return from the dead as promised.
Welcome to Street Prophets Saturday, an open thread at the intersection of religion and politics. Feel free to talk about visions, religion, politics, pooties, food, and/or what you’re working on. You don't have to loose your head to participate in the conversation.
