Malcolm X http://www.biography.com/...
Today history reminds us once again of a time when life was ugly if you were black. Malcolm X was assassinated 50 years ago today. Well it was at a Sunday afternoon rally.
Malcolm was born during a time when racism was openly practiced. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska. I would have guessed somewhere in the South. His father was a minister. Once, every window was smashed and broken in his house. After that happened, the family moved to East Lansing, Michigan. One would think life would have
been easier for them. It was there his Father was murdered. The police called the murder a suicide.
Malcom reminds me of me. I would have wanted to deal with racism anyway I could, even in a violent way. The way blacks were treated and in some situations still are, is
a national disgrace. I get it why he was a petty criminal in his early life and owed it
to Islam to change him. Martin Luther King was no fan of his because Malcolm had no problem with using violence. They both were assassinated. yes, for different reasons
but being born black got them both killed.
Malcolm grew Islam from just a few believers to thousands in this country. He was in favor of a separate state. He was killed by three men mad of his feelings towards his religious leader at the time.
It took a few years before Malcom was given the respect of being a vocal spokesman
telling the world what our country did to black people in America. He died a proud man
when he was 39 years old. He died because he was black. Yes there were other reasons
he was killed, but dealing with pain all his life drove him to a rally to die.
Fast forward to 2015. racism is alive and well in many parts of this Country. It's more
subtle where I live but racism is alive and well in Seattle, Washington. walk into a fancy
department store if your a black man, Walk into the same store if you're white. I bet
a black person is watched more closely than a white man. This is racism.
Will there ever be a time when racism is declared dead? Republican's will tell you it's
dead now. Republican's want to do away with voting rights, change the shape of a district so republican's can control power by cheating. More people voted for Democrats
than Republicans in 2014. Republicans laugh at how they had to cheat to hold power.
Being white, I apologize for all the wrongs done to people of color in this country. I need
to fight along with people of color to have rights I have because I'm white.
America has an ugly past dealing with color of a person's skin. We owe Malcolm and all
who fought along his side the promise the battle will continue for as long as necessary
to have a colorblind country.
