If Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in his speech tomorrow before Congress criticizes, as expected, the negotiations by the United States and other nations with Iran over its nuclear weapons program what alternatives does he propose?
Sanctions can be increased. But does anyone really think that additional sanctions will prevent Iran from building a bomb? At the most, additional sanctions would only delay the process.
If no treaty is concluded, Israel and/or the U.S. might decide to bomb Iranian nuclear facilities but this could certainly lead to Iranian attacks not only against Israel but also against American facilities around the world. Furthermore, if Iran were bombed, public and government opinion would solidify in Iran and the country would quickly move to repair its nuclear facilities and move ahead with its nuclear weapons program
If there is no treaty, Iran will build a nuclear bomb and Israel will be threatened even more.
What is generally left unstated is that Netanyahu and the hawks in Congress don’t want any deal with Iran no matter what it contains. But they can’t say they want military action. Yet isn’t that the underlying message?
Therefore, without any treaty that prevents Iran from building a nuclear weapon, Israel faces military options which still would not prevent an ongoing existential threat.
