So I had court tonight. Not that uncommon of an event in the life of a defense attorney in St. Louis County.
The court I was going into was being protested. I am also not sure why they were protesting court when if they really want to change the municipal court they need to change the municipal government or dissolve the city altogether. On the other hand perhaps it was just a good place to get exposure. Either way I wish them well.
While going into court a protester asked me a question. I am going to paraphrase it because I didn't memorize it I had other things on my mind.
"Why are you supporting this corrupt system by participating in it?" Or something similar.
I answered that I was here because my client has a constitutional right to an attorney. Which is true but not really the complete truth.
Now that I have had some time to think I would like to add to my answer.
1. Yes I am here because I am getting paid too. That is the way the world works I cannot afford to work for free. I have bills to pay and student loans that just won't quit.
2. If you think the system is unfair now. What do you think it would be like if there were no defense lawyers? Seriously do you want the only lawyer in the courtroom to be the prosecution?
3. Now for lots of reasons I am not going to discuss my client's case but ultimately I was there to help my client. That is what I do. I help people. It doesn't matter if I have to go through a picket line, or be yelled at by alleged victims, or scowled at by family of the alleged victims. I am here to help my clients. I am often the only person who will when the whole system is arrayed against them.
