So Edmund Pettus was an impassioned secessionist, Confederate war 'hero' and Grand Dragon of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan. On that resume, he became a post- Civil War U.S. Senator.
Indeed, there's more work to do. Purging the specter of Edmund Pettus from this hallowed National Historic Landmark is part of that work. The Lewis-Williams Bridge, honoring John Lewis and Hosea Williams, befits.
And while we're at it, remove the 'stars and bars' and its likeness from those southern state flags that glorify the Confederacy to this day. Celebrating the stars and bars as a symbol of Southern heritage is as morally abhorrent as celebrating a swastika.
