Appalachia is a working class, majority white area of the the United States. For years, Appalachia has been a bastion of Democratic politics, from Kentucky, West Virginia, Arkansas, etc. We all know that Barack Obama has had a hard time winning the hearts of most Appalachians:
-Received 37% of the vote in Kentucky in 2012
-Recieved 41% of the vote in Kentucky in 2008
-Recieved 35% of the vote in West Virginia in 2012
-Recieved 42% of the vote in West Virginia in 2008
Barack Obama did horribly with West Virginia Democrats in the 2012 primary, only getting 41% of the vote against a convicted felon, Keith Judd. The same in Kentucky, with a unknown perennial candidate Randall Terry. However, Obama won the presidency in 2008 and 2012.
However, can a African-American in Appalachia from either party win statewide there? Governor? Secretary of State?, or does Appalachia still have "racial views" over African-American candidates?
