In 2005, after the Bush/Cheney re-election victory, lots of Democrats and some progressives have asked for then-Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, a legend in Virginia Democratic circles to run for president in 2008. He was seen as the top challenger to Hillary Clinton and Evan Bayh at the time. Warner skipped the 2008 presidential bid, and ran for the then-open seat by then-Virginia Sen. John Warner (R). Warner won easily over former Virginia Gov. Jim Gilmore not only due to Barack Obama's Virginia strategy but Warner's retail-style campaign. However, Warner has been viewed by some progressives and Democratic-leaning voters as a "DINO", and a sellout during his term in the Senate.
Mark Warner barely won re-election to the Senate in a tough year for Democrats in 2014 over GOP lobbyist Ed Gillespie. Warner was criticized by some Democrats as not mobilizing African-Americans, young voters, progressive voters, Latinos. Since his second term, Warner has had a very centrist record. He supports a type of Social Security "reform". That is the same reform that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, MSNBC "host" Joe Scarborough likes. Hillary Clinton is likely to be the 2016 presidential nominee, , barring any disaster. Mark Warner seems like an electable Democrat, although he barely won re-election in 2014. He has a centrist record, but is liberal. He's a businessman, can self-fund his campaign, and doesn't look like a rich white guy (a Romney, etc.)He could do well in the South (Georgia, Florida), will most likely do well in his home Virginia, a key battleground state. I am not supporting him, but it is a possibility should anything go wrong in the summer and the fall. However, if Hillary had declined, would you have considered Mark Warner for president in 2016?
