A USA Today article today by Susan Page says that a USAToday/Suffolk University poll notes that a 51-35% majority says it is no longer ‘practical’ for the Supreme Court to ban marriage equality because it is now supported and happening in so many states.
Of course, for so many millions of us, attempts to prevent marriage equality from coming to pass were unconscionably discriminatory from the start. It’s an issue that should have been decided before all of those finally married were ever born. Finally the poll numbers are showing what the society already knows - it’s what’s right for our society and our people.

Will the Supreme Court understand this? That is an open question. They aren’t that wise, as a group (you know the ones dragging them down.). But, neither are they very bold. And it would take some serious cheek to reverse the justice that has already arrived. If they rule as they should, will it be because of relative practicality? Perhaps. But the real deciding factor should be the consequences if they don’t. Even large numbers of those who opposed marriage equality understand that reversing it involves a totally separate and distinct injustice: Of telling people they cannot have what they already have, what they’ve been told they may have, in so many states. Giving it and taking it away … it just won’t fly. And shouldn’t.
Do the Supremes understand that? I am not remotely confident that they do, frankly. That’s a major reason why this next election is so critical, because the next eight years will see several Supreme Court nominations. But it isn’t just the nominations that we need. We need the majority in the Senate to confirm quality - not mediocre - nominees.
The article goes on to state that the nation has ‘turned a corner’ on this subject. I agree, but we’ve also seen a host of new ‘corners’ pop up, as conservatives scramble to codify discrimination and bigotry into new laws, as they struggle to preserve their hideous, vicious WEDGES - validating and reinforcing bigotry everywhere they find it, in every store and business.
We have big fights before us on this. And they have big, humiliating defeats before them.

Today was a day of storms here. Those who have lived in southern states know the intensity of storms that are possible once they start rolling, when warmer weather begins, and atmospheric energy begins feeding the storms.
Kathy is familiar with them, since she moved here from California some years ago now, and has seen her share of thunderstorms. A good friend of hers just moved here from Colorado, with her husband, and it is being a much more eye-opening experience for them! Her friend walked out to the chicken coop very briefly, earlier today, and the storm picked that MOMENT to unleash its fury, and in two seconds she was soaked to the skin.
My sister’s best friend, from Montana, visited a few summers back, and they got caught out in a terrific cloudburst. Her friend acknowledged that they do indeed have rain in Montana, but ‘there’s SPACE between the drops!’ Which, in storms like these, it can seem there is not such space! There was hail, too. Kathy said she saw some ping pong ball size. I did not see any quite that large, but it’s still no joke to be out in it.
We wish with all our hearts we could pass the extra rainfall (but not the storms!) on to those who need it so desperately. But I’m afraid all we can do is send you our best wishes, and hopes for better weather in the near future. Despite the obstacles our species has set in the path of such developments.

On to tonight’s comments! (Our dear brillig is out of town, errors are all mine.)
Tonight's Top Comments!
From Village Vet:
In Words in Action's article on the mental health dangers of neoliberalism, neimann made the comment of the day!
TParrish tells a joke about a liberal and a conservative in a lifeboat; commentators note that it sure makes a good metaphor for the way things seem to be in the real world.
From Steven D:
From Brooklynbadboys diary "Conservatives really hate America,' I believe this excellent and concise response by exlrrp deserves recognition!
Tonight's Comment 'flags:'
Flagged by bakeneko, this comment by raboof compliments our community (among other things)! ::wink::
Flagged by Dustin Mineau (the 'flag' was flagged by thanatokephaloides), this comment by JamesGG explains a lot about the changes that have come to conservatism in the last several decades.
