Social media has taught me many things and while I have had many, many disagreements with people the main thing I have learned is you can't win an argument with someone who won't acknowledge facts because it doesn't fit what they believe. Be it religion, politics, guns or social issues most people come to the table with their own beliefs and most are based on emotion not on facts.
A lot of the gun disagreements are based on emotion from both sides, pro gun people ignore American history before the Heller supreme court ruling that for the first time acknowledged gun ownership as a "right" based on the 2nd amendment while on the other side most pro gun regulators pull the dead child card. If the debate goes on long enough and the pro gun party gets angry enough Hitler is usually brought up which ends most debates because once you go Nazi you don't go back.
Politics has broken down the same way, people vote based on emotions and not their own personal interests. That is why you see a person living in poverty collecting food stamps while trying to hold onto what little they have but they vote republican because some day they might be rich. They ignore the fact that income mobility in the United States is below average and harder to move up than countries they themselves call "socialist". They make people who need government assistance out to be "takers" who only need it because they are "lazy" again ignoring that current military personal and veterans often qualify for food stamps and other assistance and most people on food stamps work at least one job but need a little help.
The emotion argument only further divides people thanks to the 24/7 cable news networks that feed into and promote what you believe instead of giving you the facts. We see debates on issues like climate change that have one person for and one person who beliefs it's a hoax when in reality if they wanted to show the true debate they would have 99 scientists on the pro climate change side and 1 on the anti climate change side. Emotion can't be taken out of people but in that small instance where facts get inside the bubble they live on minds can be changed and that's why I and you should keep putting the truth and facts out there, if it helps one person find the truth it's worth it.
