The right wing is targeting the social safety net. The poor are an easy target. They're not particularly powerful in a country where spending cash is protected as free speech.
The work ethic ethos and the American Dream go hand in hand. Work hard enough and anyone can get ahead. Citizens are only poor because they're not working hard enough. The poor don't deserve a safety net. The poor certainly don't deserve a minimum wage. The moral defects of a poor work ethic are clearly coupled with poor education and career choices. If you're not honest enough to work hard, you clearly aren't smart enough to make good economic decisions.
Ginning up fear is a proven mechanism to achieve power. The undeserving poor are taking money away from hardworking American citizens. The poor are thieves.
Our moral heritage is twisted to paint this attack as social good. The poor need to be weaned off government support, for their own good. It's a mitvah to help the poor off welfare. There may be some pain along the path to goodness, but everyone knows a little pain encourages good behavior.
Let the right wing attack the poor. Let the right wing take the food out of citizens' mouths. Let them push people to the edge. I just want a simple quid pro quo.
Cut the social safety net and in return give every citizen removed from the welfare roles a couple of guns and a bunch of ammo.
Good luck Walmart heirs!
