We all know
libertarianism doesn't work. That has already been established on this site and everywhere.
So, why do you see white males gravitate to this ideology? Eric Posner wrote about the Paranoid Libertarian. As he explained:
Paranoid libertarians have a favorite (real) enemy: the angry liberal. This was the target of financier Tom Perkins’ notorious letter to the Wall Street Journal. Perkins complained about “demonization of the rich” and suggested progressives might soon inflict a Kristallnacht against one-percenters. Perkins thus exposed himself as a paranoid libertarian—but he is also right that many people on the left are extremely angry at the rich, at Wall Street, at shadowy corporate interests. Occupy Wall Street is the angry institutional counterpart to the paranoid Tea Party.
Some suggest that
libertarianism is really a form of racism in sheep's clothing:
There are two kinds of libertarians: true believers in the constitution and racists hiding behind the constitution. Determining what kind of libertarian someone is, though, is as easy as asking his or her opinion on Ferguson.
That seems harsh - although you do have reputable media outlets writing pieces like
"Exposing the Racial History of Libertarianism."
It is a tough question. Andrew Sullivan asked: "Is Libertarianism Fundamentally Racist?"
Jonathan Chait argued: yes.
I'm not so sure: I think it is possible that libertarians are not racists.
