Welcome to the Tuesday edition of the Coffee Hour at Street Prophets. This is an open thread where we can discuss what’s happening in our lives, what we’ve been working on, and our opinions on current events. Today’s question: What’s your hot favorite beverage?
I realize that the choice of a favorite beverage may vary greatly according to time of day (some people drink different beverages in the morning than they do in the evening), day of week (for those who work, the favorite beverages on weekends may be different than on work days), and social situation (sporting events, birthday parties, family gatherings, church socials, and so on).
I hear rumors that there are some people whose first beverage in the morning is coffee. At least some of the pootie diaries seem to suggest that coffee may be vital to one’s mental and emotional health in the morning. Looking at the data, more than half (54%) of American adults drink coffee and 65% of the coffee drinkers consume coffee with breakfast. Among coffee drinkers, 60% claim that they need a cup of coffee to start their day; 54% say that coffee makes them feel more like their self. More than a third (35%) of American coffee drinkers, by the way, drink their coffee black. About a quarter of all coffee drinkers (24%) drink 13 or more cups of coffee each week.
I’m one of those people who is an occasional coffee drinker. There are times when I meet people in a local coffee shop and have an Americano or a latté. Then there are times when eating out that I will drink coffee. I have found that some people don’t drink coffee in the evening because it keeps them awake. I don’t seem to have that problem.
My preferred morning drink is tea, using consumed after I’ve been up for an hour or two. At the present time, I start off the day with Hot Cinnamon Sunset, then switch to Earl Gray or Irish Breakfast. I find the process of making a cup of tea to be a good break from my writing. I also drink tea in the afternoon and in the evening. During the day I usually drink a variety of different teas.
The highest consumption of tea, by the way, is in Turkey, followed by Ireland, the United Kingdom, and Russia.
One additional question for coffee and tea drinkers: do you ever reheat your coffee or tea in the microwave?
This is an open thread. Feel free to talk about other beverages (it is rumored that some people actually drink water), food (to go with the beverages, of course), politics and religion (what else should we talk about while consuming our favorite beverages?).
