A couple of weeks ago we got to see one of our favorite bands play in Spartanburg. The remarkable thing about it, for us, was that the band disbanded in early 2011! So seeing them together again was a rare treat.
More below, but first, a word from our sponsor ...

The song I'm sharing is actually a cover The Belleville Outfit did of a song written by a friend of theirs, a fellow named Seth Walker. A gospel song (which usually isn't something that appeals to me), it highlights one of my favorite things about this little band. I'm including Seth Walker's performance of it, first, since I like him (and his fine voice!) also.
Seth usually tours alone, though we did see him once in Asheville at the same venue with the Belleville Outfit. There, he performed the song, and they didn’t.
These are the lyrics for ‘Lay Down.’ (From Seth Walker’s website.)
Lay Down Lay down my soul for thee
My soul for thee. Got to lay down
Fly right through heavens gate
Through Heavens gate Got to lay down
(Chorus) I’m washing of my hands in the sanctified water
Washing of my hands today
I’m washing of my hands in the sanctified water
Washing of my hands in the river of faith
Darkness came over me
Came over me Got to lay down
Devil put the tempt in me
Put the tempt in me and I got to lay down
Chorus
It’s buried inside of me
Inside of me and I go to lay down
Worship a higher love
A higher love and I got to lay down
Chorus
Here is a video of Seth Walker performing his song.
Obviously a performer with just one instrument isn't going to be able to provide the same musical depth for a song that an entire band can, so to my mind this contrast is no negative reflection on Seth Walker. Indeed, I am sure they intended only to do the greatest justice to his song that they could. I think they did exceptionally well indeed! Rob Teter sings the lead vocals, the rest of the band slowly joins in. For me, the contributions of Connor Forsyth, the keyboard player, really set the song on fire. (Though I really like Marshall Hood's guitar, too!) At least one other version of the song on YouTube features some of Phoebe's fiddle, though this one does not.
So here is Belleville performing the song.
We first encountered Belleville in 2007, I think, before they ever released a CD, when they played here at a small restaurant we frequent. The venue offered a microscopic stage for a group of six, but they didn’t care, they just killed it! And we’ve been huge fans ever since.
Sadly, Phoebe Hunt, the only female in the group, who played fiddle and lead vocals, decided to pursue an independent career, in 2011, and the guys decided to end the band. Phoebe got involved in the One Village Music Project and the band re-formed for two 2015 concerts, one in Austin and one in Spartanburg, SC. So, surprisingly, unexpectedly! we got to see them again!
I really hope you enjoy this little glimpse into a fine former band. I will say that they had a terrific time playing together in Spartanburg, and I wouldn’t exclude the possibility of there being future reunions. I will be sure to let you know if I hear of that!
On to tonight's comments! Formatted by our terrific TC leader, brillig!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
