The beautiful old mining town of Telluride sits in a box canyon in the very isolated southwest corner of Colorado. Telluride is best known for Telluride Ski Resort which is connected by gondola to the ski enclave called Mountain Village sitting high above the valley floor.
Given that Telluride is surrounded by towering canyons walls and sits nearly 9000 feet above sea level, very little light pollution obscures the unfettered enjoyment of the stunning night skies. Except for the light emanating from the town itself, of course.
So beginning this evening, all 2300 residents have been asked to shut off outdoor lights and pull their shades before hitting the sheets. Business owners are also participating by shutting down or extremely limiting light coming from their shops.
Stargazers and photographers are coming together to see the show while astronomers will be on hand to help explain the majesty of what they are seeing. Ben Canales who specializes in night sky photography said "For all of humanity's history up until the last two generations, humans have always looked up and seen the night sky."
Although probably not quite as free of light pollution as Telluride will be tonight, I have been fortunate enough to be in areas of the country that offered spectacular night skies, particularly in Colorado and Northern California. Seeing the night sky with little artificial competition has a deeply primal feel about it. It is stirring to the very core. I think it is pretty cool of Telluride to give people this opportunity to see the wonders of our universe at its ultimate, if just for one night.
