SB 2- The bill that would allow Magistrates and Register of Deeds to receive taxpayer funded income for not doing a major part of their jobs is very alive and may become law, even after Gov. Pat McRory (R) vetoed the legislation last week.
ACLU Fact Sheet on SB 2
Monday, the State Senate easily overrode the veto. It is now on to the State House, led by Speaker Tim Moore (R) to override the bill one final time.
But Speaker Tim Moore is not going to let you know when the vote is going to occur. The GOP has the override attempt calendered for today. This means the bill could be taken up today, or anytime in the near future.
Why not schedule it, let the public know, and vote?

By all accounts, the vote is going to be close, within one or two votes. The GOP needs 3/5th of members present to override. There were 10 members who did not vote for the original bill. Of these 10, 6 were GOP. The GOP needs 5 of their 6 members to vote to override for it to pass by one vote. There were 2 Democrats who voted for the bill. If they could be swayed to sustain the veto, the GOP could be out of luck.
That is why Speaker Tim Moore will not release when they are going to vote on the bill. He does not have the votes to override.....yet.
Meanwhile you can be sure the GOP are whipping, horse trading, cajoling, and even threatening their members to vote for the override.
An interesting take on SB2. If a magistrate or register of deeds refuses to perform or help a same sex marriage, they must be removed from performing duties in ALL marriages for a year.
Imagine working with someone getting the same pay as you for doing the same job. Imaging they were not required to perform the same job duties and YOU had to pick up the slack for them!!!
Interesting thought, with the override attempt on the calendar, the Speaker can bring it up for a vote at anytime. Do not put it past the GOP to schedule the vote if a member leaves the floor for the bathroom or it a couple of Democrats happen to have excused absences (doctor's appointments, or graduations)!!!
What a stupid bill and a stupid bigoted law that would hinder North Carolina's ability to attract businesses. The GOP is laser focused and hell bent on passing it.
