FreedomToMarry.org was founded in 2003 by Evan Wolfson and with one far-reaching but
crtical goal:
Win Nationwide Marriage Equality for same-sex couples.
The strategy of this organization has always called for spreading the freedom to marry to more and more states through legislative action and changing hearts and minds to support our cause – and our Civil Right to marry the person we love! But even in the beginning Evan Wolfson and his organization has planned and pushed for a final
showdown at the Supreme Court.

Frontiers Media Blog about Freedom To Marry
With yesterday’s Supreme Court decision in ‘Obergefell v. Hodges’ we now have Nationwide Marriage Equality so the once considered far-reaching goal of Freedom To Marry has now been achieved.
Evan Wolfson has stated that his organization will wind down and close.
Wolfson confirms that, with the marriage triumph, he does indeed intend to wind down Freedom to Marry. “Today we achieved our strategy, and we hit our goal, and this campaign is done.”
Evan also goes on to say that he will do so smartly and strategically, over a period of months.
“The work of the movement is far from over,” Wolfson nonetheless acknowledges, adding, “we’re not going to close overnight, were going to do a smart, strategic wind down over a period of months, working with movement colleagues and partners to capture the lessons learned, to share our resources.”
Evan makes it clear that the work of the LGBT movement is far from over and that he and many others in the organization will carry on and continue fighting for LGBT equality in other areas.
“I expect that many of my exceptionally great team will go on to work on other fronts,” he says, “and then we will be able to shut down this organization, but continue the work of our movement, of course.”
I have long been an ardent supporter of Evan Wolfson and his Freedom To Marry organization. Freedom To Marry carried our movement and our fight for Marriage Equality to every corner of America. In my opinion we might not have seen the Supreme Court victory this soon had it not been for this organization. That last part is certainly debatable but what is hopefully not debatable is just how much Freedom To Marry has advanced our cause.
I think the singular focus of Freedom To Marry allowed it to be far more effective than it would have been had the fight for Marriage Equality only been one of its endeavors.
While the closing of this organization is still likely several months away I thought it fitting to write this diary and thank Evan Wolfson and his team with Freedom To Marry for their tireless effort in fighting for Marriage Equality over the last 12 years.
I look forward to following this team after this organization shuts down to see what other LGBT efforts they engage in.
