From Thursday morning's Austin American-Statesman:
173 Texas counties (out of 254) now issuing marriage licenses to same sex couples.
According to a spokesperson for Texas for Marriage (a gay-rights advocacy group), 59 other counties are ready to begin once they update software or perform other changes to license application forms. The status of 12 other counties is currently unknown. County clerks in several counties that previously refused to issue licenses to same sex couples are now issuing licenses. These include Hood, Bell, and San Saba Counties. I will see if I can figure out which counties (if any) are still refusing to issue licenses.
Couples in Texas can obtain a marriage license from any county in Texas. You do not need to get the license from the county in which you reside.
Also, as of July 1, employee benefits have been extended to same sex spouses of employees of the State of Texas, the University of Texas, and Texas A&M University. I will try to find out if other state universities, county and city governments have done likewise.
