Per a June 14, 2015 diary by gjohnsit, he reports that the Dominican Republic is working to get themselves "socially cleansed" of Haitians.
This diary is going to be short but it will get to the point. So it's my understanding that the authorities in the Dominican Republic want to kick out of their island every Dominican citizen of Haitian descent as well as documented and undocumented immigrants from Haiti in order to make their island "pure" of only "bona fide" Dominican citizens. Isn't this similar to what Hitler tried to achieve in Nazi Germany during the reign of the Third Reich and what Serbians tried to do in Bosnia in the early 90s when they were united as Yugoslavia?
I find it laughable that the Dominicans want to "cleanse" their island of all people that are not Dominican. Especially that it is a harsh fact that Dominicans try to enter Puerto Rico (a U.S. territory) and Florida all the time as undocumented immigrants as well.
So the Dominican government wants their country to be purely Dominican but they want to also allow their people to enter the U.S. as illegal immigrants. If that's not hypocritical, then I don't know the meaning of the word.
On a side note, it's also a known fact that immigrant workers in the sugar industry in the Dominican Republic are exploited and physically abused on a daily basis by their employers, according to the AFL-CIO.
Since the United States is in the business of shaming other countries for human rights violations, I believe our U.S. State Department should put the Dominican Republic on the U.S. human rights shitlist.
