I've been thinking about the Confederate Flag and trying to understand how and why it is so important to some Southerners that this flag remain and still be flown.
I get that it has historical significance, but to me, I liken this to how the Nazi symbols or Nazi uniforms have historical significance. The Civil War and World War II are important events in our history where hopefully lessons were learned and we not forget what they represented.
This compelling quote from the creator of the Confederate Flag, William T. Thompson, sums it up by saying, "we are fighting to maintain the Heaven-ordained supremacy of the white man over the inferior or colored race..."
This evidently means just that: fighting for the right of a white person to reign supreme over black people or those of a supposed lesser race. It sure sounds like racism to me.
No country fighting along the U.S. during World War II would have allowed a faction of Germans who believed in white supremacy to fly the Nazi flag, especially in the face of Jewish people.
So my question is, why on earth would we Americans, yes, all of us, allow the Confederate flag to be flown in the face of our black citizens?
