Welcome to Sunday Brunch. This is an open topic thread so help yourself to the goodies and sit a spell and let us know what is new with you. I have been on Facebook for a long time. It does allow me to keep track of friends from around the world. I can also keep track of artist and writer friends and keep up with some of the movers and shakers of the political world I live in. I rarely get political on my page but when I do I seem to find a few numbers have wandered away. Follow me below the fleur-de-Kos and see what musings they objected to this time.
It is a fact that there are three Branches of National Government: Legislative (Congress), Judicial (the Courts headed by the Supreme Court), and Executive (the office of the President which could care less if the holder of the office is half white and half black). State Governments mirror this makeup and Local governments are similar and this Federal (first), State (second), and Local (third) arrangement is responsible for government in this country.
The reason for three branches in government is to maintain the system of checks and balances so that no one area of government can get a monopoly and destroy this country.
This country was never founded as a "Christian Nation." We were founded on the separation of church and state. In simple terms the bible does not supersede the constitution.
You have the right to your religious beliefs, however, they do not trump anyone else's rights. If you really believe you can't issue a marriage license to a gay couple because of your "religious" beliefs then resign and go to work for your church. 50 years ago it was illegal to marry a mixed race couple. Clarence Thomas would not have been able to marry back then.
Whether you agree or disagree with the Supreme Court it is legal now for LGBT people to have the same rights as other couples to marry. My life is full with many family and friends who are gay. I want them to have all the rights I have. It won't hurt me in any way if gays marry. LGBT marriage is legal. Just treat it as everything else.
If you are so insistent on calling yourself Christian then read Christ's words about homosexuality. Zero. Nada. When the elders hoped to catch Christ speaking heresy they asked him which commandment was the most important. He answered, "I give you a new commandment. Thou shall love thy Lord thy God with thy whole heart and thy whole mind. And the second is like onto the first thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself." No qualifiers.
Hopefully when politicians decide to come to their senses and stop posturing we can tackle the major threat to our lives which is climate change and we can work hard at keeping our world inhabitable and we can explore to see if there are other lives in our universe that we can learn from.
