After every new tragic disturbing, and avoidable mass shooting -- many members of Congress can be counted on, to trot out the tired old tropes:
"Guns don't kill people -- People kill people."
"If the killer didn't have a gun -- they would have used some other weapon."
"The answer is to arm teachers, arm Administrators, to arm movie-goers -- because 'the best remedy to a mad man with a gun, is arming more citizens with guns.'"
And so it goes ...
-- from usatoday.com
Meanwhile, the death tolls continue to rise -- where unsuspecting citizens are abruptly killed by madmen with guns (be it, mentally mad or socially). And the clueless press goes wild, with their deja-vu feigned incredulity.
"How did this Happen?"
"Why did this Happen?"
"What are the Clues that could have forewarned the Authorities, of this ticking tragedy?"
"Who will ever give us the answers that could correct this disturbing New Normal?"
Meanwhile, the Congress-cowards that DO NOTHING to protect the America People from this National scourge ... they make damn sure no "armed citizens" can visit them in their workplaces.
For some odd reason, THEY DON'T feel safer, when surrounded by 'armed strangers'. So much for the veracity of their tired old talking points ...
If Gun Control Doesn't Work, Why Does Congress Need Metal Detectors?
by Larry Womack, huffingtonpost.com -- 12/19/2012
[...] Members of Congress, it seems, are very much in favor of controlling the flow of deadly weapons into their workplace. And by "controlling," I mean completely barring the entry of guns into the building -- unless they are worn by someone paid to protect them, of course. If you or I visit the U.S. Capitol or any congressional office building, we can expect to pass through a metal detector.
[...]
It's easy to see why they would be so concerned for their own safety. The United States currently has, by a wide margin, the highest number of gun-related deaths of any highly developed country. In fact, our number of firearm-related deaths is nearly three times that of any other nation ranked as "very high" on the Human Development Index. (Or perhaps merely 40 percent higher -- we'll get to that soon.)
[...]
If we are to believe that the correlation between strict gun control and low rates of gun violence in other industrialized nations really is some sort of incredible coincidence, events in Australia must be taken for nothing short of a miracle. In the 18 years prior to 1996 gun control reforms, that nation saw 13 mass shootings. In the 16 since, they have seen one -- which usually isn't even counted, because the shooter was only able to kill two people before he had to stop to reload (because: gun control) and was apprehended. That wouldn't even count as a mass shooting in the guide to American massacres I linked to earlier. Still, after that incident, Australia reviewed and tightened its gun laws again. Ten years later, there hasn't been another.
Here's that link:
A Guide to Mass Shootings in America
There have been at least 71 in the last three decades -- and most of the killers got their guns legally.
by Mark Follman, Gavin Aronsen, and Deanna Pan; motherjones.com -- July 16, 2015
[...]
Weapons: Of the 143 guns possessed by the killers, more than three quarters were obtained legally. The arsenal included dozens of assault weapons and semi-automatic handguns with high-capacity magazines. [...]
The killers: More than half of the cases involved school or workplace shootings (12 and 20, respectively); the other 30 cases took place in locations including shopping malls, restaurants, and religious and government buildings. Forty four of the killers were white males. Only one of them was a woman. (See Goleta, Calif., in 2006.) The average age of the killers was 35, though the youngest among them was a mere 11 years old. (See Jonesboro, Ark., in 1998.) A majority were mentally troubled -- and many displayed signs of it before setting out to kill.
[...]
Of course, the members of Congress find it much more "politically viable" to:
To detect Metal-devices entering their workplaces, and preventing any harm before it starts,
than they do,
To detect those "displayed signs" of the mentally troubled, and preventing any violent harm from striking randomly and coldly, in the 'wild west' of so many hapless American communities.
Unfortunately for us (without the Metal-Detectors), Congress refuses to learn this 1 simple lesson:
"Troubled-people with Guns, do kill People."
They.kill.them -- Dead!
And there's not a damn-thing (supposedly) that Congress can DO about it. Or so they feigningly say ...
