Have you tried the Open Beta of the dKos version 5 software? Do you love it? Do you hate it? Would you care to vent? How about that new logo, huh? And what happened to Flagman?
Below the fold is a set of links to DK5 Diaries and Helpdesk discussions, and below that you will find your contributions.
Diaries, or Possibly Stories, Articles, or Blog Posts
There has been a bit of fuss from time to time about what to call the things we write and publish here on dKos. It's confusing. We had a discussion about it at the Helpdesk recently.
Difficult to know how to use this forum.

How do I find new articles? Is an article the same as a diary?

Yes an article is the same as a diary. Don't know why we call them diaries, but we do. That is changing and we'll probably start calling them stories. But, yes, they are just the articles you see posted at Daily Kos.

The terminology of articles, Diaries, blog posts, and stories, all meaning almost exactly the same thing, is inconsistent, and will remain so. That is how language works.
DK5 has a Story Editor, and also a link to Recent Diaries. (Scroll down on the right.) The link to invoke the Story Editor from your personal menu says New Blog Post.
OLinda wants to make these link names consistent. We'll see.
Leaving the terminology aside, here are several of the thingies in question.
Me: Cranky Users: Hey! Don't Delete My Hotlist, kos!
Hotlists are going away unless we can rescue them. The argument is on one side that hardly anybody uses them, and on the other that it's because nobody can find theirs.
kos: Beta site update, and yes, YOU are the focus group
Discussing the changes over at the beta site, Mokurai answered a question about focus group testing of the site by saying:
This right here is the focus group. All of us.
The concept of the open beta couldn't have been better summarized! You are all the most effective focus group ever assembled, and have already had incredible influence shaping the new site
This Open Thread is to give you another chance to do so.
Jason Libsch, VP Products and Technology: Beta Gets Better
Ooh, bug fixes and new features! With promise of more!
Jason Libsch again: Ok, What do You Really Think About Tip Jars?
Customized Tip Jars, that is. Also, sigs will no longer appear in comments, but you can see a commenter's sig by hovering over the commenter's name, along with other profile information.
elfling, DK4 Project Manager, among other things, such as Scourge of Spammers and The Oncoming Banhammer: DK5 Tutorial: Writing a diary
Good video, although the sound level is a bit low.
Me again: DK5 Click by Click Reference Manual: Advise and Complain
A tutorial on background colors in tables, and some bugs, and an update on the DK5 documentation project. You can contribute to our excruciatingly correct and complete description of every icon, button, link, menu item, dialog box, and error message in all of the DK5 Beta software in a variety of ways. Join in creating it using the collaborative online Booktype software, or express your views here for us to check and maybe add to the manuals (Reference and Tutorial), or file issues with the Helpdesk.
Or just ask questions. We have a DK5 FAQ to fill in, too.

DK 5 - Daily Kos Beta: Bugs

DK 5 - Daily Kos Beta: How Do I Do This Thing (on the beta site)?
The following kind of bug is annoying and confusing when it happens, but also funny. I have encountered and reported other such erroneous error messages.
editing tags

When I click to save after editing tags in a published diary, I get:
You do not have permission to modify these story tags.
But, it takes my edit and they appear in the tags.
We have been looking all over for this next one. We have the official whitelist for embedding images without going through the Image Library, but only a partial list for videos, including Youtube, Vimeo, MSNBC, and Comedy Central. Definitely not HBO, so no John Oliver or Bill Maher clips unless they get posted on Youtube.
Where is the whitelist of sources for embedding videos?
Everything on the Beta site will be flushed, deleted, demised, killed, expired, a stiff, no more, deceased, gone to its reward, ceased to pine for the fjords, kicked the bucket, shuffled off its mortal coil, run down the curtain, joined the bleedin' choir invisible, taken the train to Bolton or perhaps Ipswitch, and become an EX-BETA. And for much of it, good riddance.
That means Diaries, drafts, new groups and changed group memberships, images uploaded to the DK5 Image Library, and all other user data created only in the Beta. In fact, it could happen at any time, if the Beta has to be reset. But we hope that the Beta will remain up after DK5 goes live, even if only for two or three weeks, to allow data to be copied over. In fact, elffling, without making any promises, is working on that. In the meantime, we can consider our options, like saving Diaries and drafts to Word processor files or HTML files, or replicating group changes and image uploads on the DK4 site.
How can we republish DK5Beta Diaries when DK5 goes live?
Well, I am not going to catalog everything over at the Helpdesk. There is a lot there, and we need more. Feel free to bring up any of your issues, or to link to or paste in anybody else's.
