Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:08 PM PT: Symone Sanders speaks:
I have the honor of Being Bernie Sanders Press Secretary. There is a potential for a little disruption tonight. I want to be clear that this campaign is about bringing people together. So if there happens to be a disruption I want everyone in this stadium to respond with a chant. Can you do that for me? Let me tell you what the chant is, we have to be on one accord. The chant is WE STAND TOGETHER. In the event that there is a disruption, that is our response.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:12 PM PT: Pull out your cellphones. Follow the campaign @BernieSanders. Like our facebook page. Text Bernie to 82623. Lets get this thing started.
Welcome to the stage Dina Foley.
Hi I am Dina and I am a proud member of electrical workers 48. This is my first union job. Through college I worked several jobs through the service industry and left college in debt. I got lucky, I got assigned a union card and now I have a union wage. But these opportunities are dwindling because organized labor threatens corporate greed. Bernie Sanders is our best hope to revitalize the labor movement. I support Bernie Sanders because of his unwavering commitment to leveling the playing field. By doing things like paying us a living wage. Rebuilding our infrastructure. Opposing race to the bottom free trade agreements like NAFTA and the TPP. I support Bernie because I dont want to live in a country in where it is idealistic to want the government to invest in our health and education. More than ever we need a leader who is willing to fight the obscene amount of influence money has on our political system. A leader who will take on immigradtion, and racial justice reform. Bernie Sanders is that leader. His record shows it. In Bernie we have a champion for our political voice. Lets get out there and organize to make Sanders the next president of the United States
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:16 PM PT: New speaker. Missed his name, and couldnt spell it if I had.
As you can tell I dont look like Bernie in many ways. But I stand with Bernie Sanders because of the values we share. To give families a fair shot, including immigrant families. For over a decade we have called for a pathway to citizenship for our brothers and sisters who contribute to communities everyday. They are out there building our homes, cooking our meals, harvesting our foods, everything to improve their lives. Their childrens lives. They cannot wait anymore. We need immigration reform now! Senator Sanders supports immigration reform that benefits our families. Senator Sanders thank you for your clear stance on immigration reform. For your stance on farm workers to unionize. I am grateful that we have a candidate like you who can cut through the rhetoric of the republican candiates. Yes we can!
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:17 PM PT: My name is Mia, I am here as an actvisit because protecting the environment from corporate interests is my number one priority. Like Bernie I believe that climate change is one of the important challenges of our time. Bernie has been a long time ally of the environmental movement. I am proud to be here today because of the broader political revolution resonating in our country. One that focuses on our energies on building our common wealth.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:27 PM PT: Symone: Before I bring out the man of the hour I want to reflect for a minute. A year ago today officer Wilson shot and killed Michael Brown and left his body in the street for 4 and a half hours. Following his death protestors took to the streets of Ferguson and they stayed in the streets for 365 days, galvanizing young people to do the same in chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Atlanta and numerous other cities across the country. People have stood up to exclaim that enough is enough. That Black lives matter. Now I think we can all agree we have come a long way as a country but tragedies like Michael Brown, Eric Garner, Sandra Blande, Treyvon Martin, Oscar Grant, Walter Scott are constant reminders that we still have work to do and we need people we trust leading the country to get the work done. We need new voices that are not afraid to speak truth about the unjustices plaguing the people of color and everyday americans. It is important to say black lives matter, but it is also important to have people in office who will turn those words into action. People who not only understand but are ready to do something about the communities that are disenfranchised. People who understand that economic and racial inequality are parallel issues that need addressed. People who are committed to preserving the right to vote, reforming the criminal justice system so that we are not locking up an entire generation of people. We need people who realize that Dr Kings dream was more than being able to sit at the lunch counter but also encompassed being able to own the establishment. When you look in your heart you know which candidate will have the courage to end the death penalty, unjust minimum, reform prison, move swiftly for alternatives for nonviolent offenders, and which candidate will really use his justice department to protect black lives, so today I ask you to reflect on the lives of those who have lost their lives. Especially those whose names we do not know. We must fight for social justice, racial justice and economic justice. I know a guy that fits this description and he is running for president of the United States of America.
BERNIE ENTERS!
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:29 PM PT: Sanders: Unbelievable. Thank you.
Hello! This is an unbelievable turnout. Let me thank Dina, Jaime, Mia, Symone for those wonderful introductions. Thats what this campaign is bout. Bringing people together.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:30 PM PT: We began this campaign all of three and a half months ago and the momentum as you can see tonight has been nothing less than extraordinary. Thank you for being here. We have had great crowds in Burlington, Minneapolis, Denver, Madison, Dallas, Houston, Portland, New Orleans, and last night 15, 000 in Seattle. Portland you have done it better than anyone else!
CHEERS!
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:32 PM PT: 20 thousand people. Thank you. Let me begin by making the point that Symone and others have made. There is no better candidate who will fight institutional racism in this country and reform our broken criminal justice system. Today in America we have the unfortunate distinction of having more people in jail than any other country on earth. I want to see people in this country and jobs and education rather than incarceration.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:34 PM PT: Today we say loudly and clearly that this great nation belong to all of us and not just a handful of billionaires.
Today we live in the wealthiest nation in the history of the world but few people feel that or understand that because almost all of the wealth is controlled by a handful of people and together we are going to change that.
Income inequality is worse today than anytime since 1928. In my view the issue of wealth and income inequality is the great moral issue of our time. And we are going to inject the issue of morality into politics today.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:36 PM PT: There is something prfoundly wrong when the top 2 tenths of 1 percent owns as much wealth as the bottom 90 percent. When over 50 % of the income generated today goes to the top 1%. When in recent years we have seen a proliferation of millionaires and billionaires while workers work longer hours for less wages. That has got to change.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:37 PM PT: This campaign is sending a message to the billionaire class that yes we can take you on.
Our message to the billionaire class is you are not going to continue to get huge tax breaks when children in America go hungry. You are not going to continue shutting down factories in America, sending our jobs abroad when millions of Americans are in need of good paying jobs. You are not going to continue to hide your billions in profit in the Cayman Islands when we have enormous unmet needs here.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:39 PM PT: The greed of the billionaire class and corporate America is destroying this country and enough is enough, it is going to end.
When we talk about the economy it is not only the grotesque level of income and ewalth inequality it is the tragic reality that the middle class has been disappearing for the last 40 years. Medium family income today is 5000 dollars less than 1999. In Vermont and here in Oregon it is not unusual to see people not just working 1 job, but 2 jobs, 3 jobs trying to cobble together some income and some healthcare. That is not whta the American Economy should be. We need an economy that works for working people, not just billionaires.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:41 PM PT: We have a tragic situation regarding youth unemployment in America. Last month I asked the economic policy institute to do a study to find out what real unemployment was in America and what they came up with is for a kid between 17-20 white unemployment 23 percent. Hispanic 36 percent. African American 51 percent. We cannot turn our back on an entire generation of young people.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:42 PM PT: if anyone thinks that those unemployment numbers are unrelated to our massive incarceration rates, you are sorely mistaken.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:43 PM PT: I do not want the US to continue to have more people in jail than any country. I want our country to be the best populated on earth. When we talk about the economy let us be very clear, millions of our fellow Americans are working at wages that are much much too low. People should not in this country have to work in this country 50 or 60 hours a week in order to survive. The federal minimum wage of 7 and a quarter an hour is a starvation wage, it has got to be raised to a living wage.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:45 PM PT: Brothers and Sisters it is not a radical idea to say that if someone works 40 hours a week that prson should not be living in poverty. And when we talk about decent and fair wages there is another injustice we must address. Men, stand with the women in demanding pay equity for women workers.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:47 PM PT: I know many of you have heard republicans talk about family values. They just looove family values. We know what they mean though. They mean that women should not be able to control their own bodies and I disagree. What they mean is women are not smart enough to purchase the contraceptives they need and I disagree. what they also mean is that our gay brothers and sisters should not be able to marry or enjoy the benefits of citizenship and I disagree.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:50 PM PT: My view is a bit different. In my view when we talk about family values we must end the embarrassment of being the only major country on earth that does not guarantee paid medical and family leave. So let me tell you what that family value really means. Today in Oregon a women is having a baby. That is an enormous day for that woman, for the dad and the baby as well. I want you to think about this: If that woman and that family have sufficient income she will be able to stay home for weeks and months to love that new bay, to bond with that new baby and that is maybe that most important thing a human being can do.
But and here is the but.. if that woman in Oregon does not have sufficient income that woman will be forced to seperate herself from her newborn baby and go back to work in 5 days, 8 days, 2 weeks. That is not a family value. That is why I will fight for 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:51 PM PT: In America today our people work more hours than any major country. And yet there are new jobs being offered everyday that have 0 paid vacation. We need every job to have 2 weeks paid vacation. We need paid sick leave for every American workers as well.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:54 PM PT: When pollsters ask people what is on their mind their answer isjobs. They are worried they will be fired, replaced. If they are young it is difficult to find the kind of work to pay the wages they need. In my view we need a major federal jobs program. A program which rebuilds our crumbling roads, bridges and water systems. In America our infrastructure should not be collapsing. We have offered legislation offerering over 13 million decent, good paying jobs. When we talk about jobs it is not just the need to create jobs but the need to not lose jobs. You are looking at a Senator who voted against NAFTA, CAFTA, and I will help lead the effort against the disastrous TPP. Corporate America has got to understand that the time is now to invest in the USA. Brothers and Sisters when we talk about greed, arrogance, thievery, these are just some of the words we can use to talk about wall street.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:56 PM PT: The truth today is most of the major financial institutions today are bigger now than when they were too big to fail. In my mind we need to reinstate Glass Steagall, but most importantly we need to break these financial institutions up. If a bank is too big to fail that bank is too big to exist. Break them up.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:58 PM PT: We need a financial system in which banks invest in small and medium sized businesses helping people buy homes, etc. Not an island unto themselves. Let me be as blunt as I can. As a result of the disastrous supreme court decision on citizens united, the american political system has been totally corrupted and the foundations of American democracy are being undermined. What the court said to the wealthiest people in America is 'guys you already own much of the economy, are already wealthy, but now we are going to give you the opportunity to buy the United States government.' And that is exactly what they are about to do if we do not stop them.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 7:59 PM PT: If you can believe it, one family, the Koch Brothers, an extremely right wing family. The second wealthiest in America that wants to end social security, the epa, the postal system.. they think a 7.25 min wage is too high, they want to abolish the concept of a minimum wage. This one family in this one election cycle is spending more money than either the Democratic Party or the Republican party. When you have a billionaire family spending more money than either party that is not Democracy that is Oligarchy and that has got to end.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 8:01 PM PT: I have made very few promises during this campaign but I want to repeat one promise that I have made. That my nominees to the supreme court would have a litmus test and that is that they must vote to overturn Citizens United.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 8:02 PM PT: America must be a vibrant democracy one that has one of the highest turnouts in the world, not one of the lowest. That anyone here in this arena no matter of your views, I want you to be able to run for office without having to beg billionaire for campaign cash. That is why we must move to public funding of elections.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 8:03 PM PT: *Bernie talks about the Voting Rights Act while my fingers rest!
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 8:06 PM PT: It has never occurred to me that the way to win an election is to deny people that disagree with me the right to vote. Those people are cowards. If you run for office, have the guts to stand behind your ideas, dont be afraid of people coming out and voting against you.
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 8:07 PM PT: Im going to let the comments take over, they are doing a great job and I have to work in the morning! Thanks for visiting!
Sun Aug 09, 2015 at 8:16 PM PT: (a little more before I go)
As human beings, parents, there is nothing more important than leaving this planet inhabitable. scientists tell us that Climate change is real, that human activity is causing devastating problems in our country and throughout the world.
More drough, more floods, weather disturbances, rising sea levels, more international conflict as people fight for limited resources of water and land. Our moral resonsibility is to work with the rest of the world to move our energy system away from fossil fuels and to sustainable energy.
When we talk about issues facing our country please understand that we remain the only major country on earth that does not guarantee healthcare as a right to all people. The affordable care act has made some progress but 35 million still have no health insurance. It is my view that healthcare is a right for all people. That is why I believe we should move to a medicaid for all single payer system.
