And what did he do, if anything, after he knew it?
This is a short diary with a couple of links about the recent conviction of Sam Ukwuachu, a college transfer student to the Baylor Bears, for sexual assault, and what the Baylor football team and the administration of the university did and didn't do about it.
Mr. Ukwuachu, who transferred from Boise State after troubles there, was convicted the day before yesterday (8/20) of second-degree sexual assault against a coed at Baylor and sentenced to 180 days in jail, 10 years probation, and 400 hours of community service.
More after the orange dingbat.
The story is here:
Art Briles and Sam Ukwuachu
Understandably, most of the questions about the treatment of the case are being directed at and about Briles, who has not acquitted himself well, especially in light of recent statements concerning what he knew about Mr. Ukwuachu before he transferred from Boise State. So now the President and Chancellor of Baylor University, our old friend Ken Starr, is vowing to get to the bottom of things:
Ken Starr Says BU Will Investigate Self
But if you read into the first link I gave above, the onus isn't just on the the football team and academic department. Deep in the Texas Monthly article, we get this little gem about BU's treatment of the victim, who is referred to throughout as Jane Doe:
Per testimony from her counselor at Baylor, Cheryl Wooten, Doe was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder following the encounter. When Doe sought to avoid Ukwuachu on campus, the school didn’t move him out of the classes or tutoring sessions the two shared—instead, she had to adjust her schedule. Eventually, Doe found her own scholarship reduced, and she transferred to another university after the 2013-14 school year.
This little nugget makes it seem as though the institution Mr. Starr runs is not blameless either. Also in the TM article are snippets concerning the university's "investigation" of the assault itself.
Shoddy is a kind way to put it.
So Mr. Rectitude is now putting his rectitude police to work to find out how such things could happen at his fine, upstanding university, things about which he, of course, knew nothing, even though the consequences of the initial assault involved parts of his administration far removed from the football team. Things that make you go hmmm.
