When the
Boy Scouts voted to stop discriminating against homosexuals it was a day to rejoice. The
vitriol from the right continued and some historically homophobic organizations—
religious institutions—passively threatened and in
some cases demanded that their flock shun the BSA. The Mormon Church, which has a
100-year history with the BSA, announced today that it will
not be leaving the Boy Scouts.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced the decision Wednesday in a news release. Church leaders decided to stay with Boy Scouts after getting assurances they can appoint troop leaders according to their own religious and moral values.
Boy Scouts of America announced on July 28 it would lift its ban on gay adult leaders while allowing church-sponsored Scout units to continue excluding gay adults.
It's a compromise to say the least. But it is a step closer to a true revelation for the Church, who is famous for
promoting anti-gay marriage legislation and other hateful, homophobic positions.
