TGIF! It's been a fun week hosting
Hillary News & Views...but all things must pass. If I'm not mistaken, Lysis returns from his vacation next week and will resume these duties. And that's a good thing actually, because
my summer vacation starts tomorrow and he'll probably need to cover for
me a little while.
Hillary returned to Ohio on Thursday and was in fighting form:
"I am thrilled to be back in Cleveland and in Ohio with so many friends," said Clinton, who spoke from a stage on Freiberger Field. "I love coming here. I love seeing the progress. I love seeing the new construction in this area." ...
The campaign already has more than 1,200 volunteers in the state, a spokesman said. ...
In her nearly half-hour speech, Clinton presented herself as a champion of civil rights and voting rights. She recognized two late pillars of Cleveland's black community – Louis Stokes, the trailblazing former congressman who died last week, and his successor, Stephanie Tubbs Jones, who was among Clinton's most loyal supporters in 2008.
Clinton also connected last year's fatal shooting of 12-year-old Tamir Rice at the hands of a Cleveland police officer with a Wednesday shooting in Virginia that took the lives of two television journalists. In doing so, Clinton made a pitch for gun control.
"I know politics are hard," she said. "I've got the scars to prove that. And I know when it comes to gun violence ... a lot of people just basically say, 'You know, it's just too hard, we're not going to try this again.' Well, I am going to tell you, I am going to keep going. I am not giving up. I am not going to sit by while more good people die, and they get 24 or 48 or 72 hours of TV coverage and then we all just say, 'Well, there's nothing we can do' – until the next time people are murdered by gun violence.
"Here in Cleveland, you know this," Clinton continued. "Tamir Rice isn't here, either. He should be. He should be healthy. He should be alive."
Here are some video highlights:
"I take it a little personal when they go after women..."
"Don't be distracted by the flamboyant frontrunner..."
"I don't know how we keep seeing shooting after shooting...and not finally say 'we've got to do something about this'"...
James O'Keefe's Iowa sting video came out, and it's a total flop.
The Clinton campaign told reporters last week it believed James O’Keefe’s video-sting outfit, Project Veritas, was targeting the campaign and trying to entrap it into breaking campaign laws.
Well, it was right, and Veritas is now out with its video. The results are bad. Really bad. Not for the Clinton campaign, but for Veritas, which is clearly struggling for relevance.
There's video at the link, but it's not worth embedding or even watching. But hey, at least the campaign will be on total alert for all future O'Keefe shenanigans...so, thanks?
A leading Super PAC supporting Clinton has released its first television ad and it's appropriately tough on just the right people:
The spot from Priorities USA makes use of Donald Trump’s remarks on immigrants bringing drugs, crime and rape across the border to paint the entire GOP field as hostile to Hispanics.
It also highlights former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker being grilled at campaign events by reporters, including Bush and Trump’s use of the term “anchor baby.”
According to The New York Times, the group will start airing the ad in the swing states of Colorado, Florida and Nevada, all of which have large populations of Hispanics. The group raised $14.5 million from donors in July, in addition to nearly $16 million in the previous six months.
Have you heard who is campaigning on Hillary's behalf on Saturday in Iowa? It's not the guy who's been at the top of early running mate buzz, but it's awfully close!
Rep. Joaquín Castro, the identical twin brother of HUD Secretary Julián Castro, will be campaigning in Iowa for Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton in Iowa this weekend.
The Clinton campaign confirmed that Castro, a Democrat, would be campaigning on Clinton's behalf while he is in Iowa for another event.
Castro's political staff said they were working on Castro's schedule for Iowa and it was not yet final.
Along with his brother, Castro is considered an up and comer in the Democratic party, which has seen strong support from Latino voters over the years. Julián Castro has been considered a potential vice presidential running mate to Clinton in 2016.
Interesting.
And far be it for me to suggest who should be Clinton's running mate, especially this early, but I must admit that "Hillary/Julián 2016" does have a nice ring and musicality to it. Are you listening out there, Clinton campaign?
Last and possibly least (but it's still fun)...one more Instagram photo: Horsin' around with Chelsea. #tbt
