My friend's dad is a loud-mouthed racist. Yet his 3 best friends are a black guy he works with, and the mixed-race lesbian couple who manage the bar he frequents (needless to say, he's also bigoted against homosexuality). When his racist bullshit gets to be too much for his friends, they generally tell him to fuck off and leave.
I'm fascinated by the fact that he's a racist, but spends a significant portion of his time socializing with black people. His son and I, both of whom are anti racist, live far more segregated lives than he does. I'm very struck by this paradox.
