Hillary Clinton was asked recently what she thought about Vice President Joe Biden entering the race for president. Her response shows who she really is.
Feigning sentimentality, she wondered aloud how a person who had suffered such losses could possibly consider entering the race:
"I mean, I cannot even imagine the grief and the heartbreak. I mean Joe has had more terrible events than most people can even, you know, contemplate. Losing his first wife, losing his first daughter, now losing his son," Clinton said. "He has to do what he has to do. But I'm just going to continue with my campaign."
I find this despicable on (at least) two levels. First off, she is presenting Biden as damaged goods. You know, how could someone who has been hit with this many tragedies, including the death of his son just last June, possibly still have the fortitude and emotional reserves to run for president? Secondly, she knows damn well that the tape of her remarks will be shown to the Vice President. Is she purposely trying to wound the man further with this litany of his life tragedies, in an attempt to influence his decision?
What else could she have said? Well, it took me about 30 seconds to come up with this sound bite: "I would welcome Joe Biden to the race if that is his decision. The more progressive democratic voices we have speaking out, the stronger we are as a party, and the more appeal we will have with the voters."
But that wasn't what she said. And she came off as a heartless, power hungry politician.
