Mike Huckabee and
Ted Cruz are swooping into Kentucky to compete for the anti-separation of church and state vote. They'll be there to
meet with the "martyr" Kim Davis—the scofflaw county clerk who won't issue marriage licenes—in her jail cell, hold a rally of bigots and
cause five schools to close down because of the traffic they're expected to cause.
Meanwhile, dozens of protestors have converged on the home and neighborhood of Judge David Bunning in Fort Thomas, Kentucky.
"You, sir, are the one that's in contempt of the law," said the Rev. Philip "Flip" Benham, head of Operation Save America and father of would-be reality TV stars David and Jason Benham. "You, sir, are the one in contempt of God's court, you're in contempt of the Constitution of the United States of America, of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and sir, you need to repent."
"If you don't repent, we're going to ask that the sheriff in Grayson County arrest you for putting this precious little girl into jail," Benham added. "It's wrong."
Of course there's a would-be reality show in the mix. It wouldn't be America otherwise.
Davis's lawyers filed a motion on Monday, asking Democratic Gov. Steve Beshear to free her from jail. Beshear declined, his office releasing a statement that this is a "matter between her and the courts." He also said he will not force the legislature into a special session, as her supporters and lawyers have requested, so that they could pass a law removing clerks' names from marriage licenses. Beshear said that to do so would cost "hundreds of thousands of dollars of taxpayers' money."
Her lawyers have also filed an appeal of the contempt of court motion that landed her in the pokey, even though, they say, she is "willing to stay in this jail as long as it takes in order for her to win back her constitutional rights not just for her but for Americans of all faiths." That would be her constitutional right not to fulfill the duties she was elected as a public servant to conduct.
