In political polling, 71 percent is massive. That's the percentage that says there should not be a government shutdown over Planned Parenthood funding, according to
new polling from CNN/ORC.
The poll finds that 71 percent of adults say it is more important for Congress to approve a spending bill to keep the government open, compared to 22 percent who say it is more important to eliminate all federal funds for Planned Parenthood. […]
The poll Monday finds that Republicans slightly prioritize avoiding a shutdown over defunding Planned Parenthood, by a margin of 48 percent to 44 percent.
Men and women have largely similar views. Men prioritize avoiding a shutdown by a margin of 70 percent to 21 percent, while women do by 71 percent to 24 percent.
Those margins are larger than those found during the last shutdown fight over Obamacare in 2013. In September of that year, CNN/ORC found that 60 percent said Congress should avoid a shutdown, and 31 percent wanted Obamacare defunded. Given that the
public blamed Republicans for that shutdown, which was marginally more popular than this one would be, and that Planned Parenthood is
more popular now than Obamacare was then, they are most definitely playing with political fire.
But hey, GOP, you're on a mission from your whacked-out base to take health care away from millions of women. Don't let a little thing like how much the public hates you get in the way.
