How is it this is not a thing yet? (It could also be just crazy enough to work)
I’m not ashamed to admit it, i’m a nerd. I love to read intelligent fiction, I will be seeing Star Wars, but I am also a huge Star Trek nerd. I am 45, and I vote.
There are a lot of us out there, going up in age to around 60 or so, and then all of the ones younger, that grew up with Star Trek. We love the show, we love the characters, we go apeshit over Tribbles. Most of all, we love the premise: a society based on the betterment of mankind.
The message is clear. Mankind is united, no one is starving, Health Care is a given, and being part of society is about doing something that in one way or another lifts up society as a whole. It isn’t a power struggle, or about who cleans the toilets. Someone has to lead, and they do that for the society as a whole. The toilets? Probably a safe bet that tiny scrubbing bubble robots are taking care of that.
The problem we have right now is the power struggle. These days we have the Tea Party on one side, happy in ignorance, scared of what is coming. We have GOP moderates in the middle, stuck in the Trickle-Down mindset, purposely ignoring economic history, and focused only on amassing the most amount of wealth. The group as a whole is refusing to see the populist wave that is coming at them that is sick and tired of not having a holodeck because science has become the enemy.
The left side? The democrats? The ones that in theory are for the idea of a great society? Well, it’s not much better. The progressives are the start of the ideal, but they are currently outnumbered by the ones to the right. Those dems? They are the problem. Let’s call them Business Society Democrats, or BS Dems for short. (I like that)
To recap, we have Tea Party, GOP Moderates, Progressives, and BS Dems.
The GOP Moderates and BS Dems realize where we are headed, but they have a money problem, which is they like money. Politics has changed the last few years, and it is not necessarily about leading anymore, it’s become a business. A big one. The sheer amount of money driving politics these days is creating wealth in a sector that should not pride wealth nearly as much as it does. These two groups are caught. On the one side, GOP Mods, the do strongly believe business drives the economy, and taxes are too high. The feel that businesses will sort out societal problems by lifting people out of poverty with competition. On the other side, BS Dems, realize people are the solution, not the problem. However, they are so caught up in raising cash to beat the GOP Mods that they have forgotten how to actually get things changed for the betterment of society as a whole. They have forgotten that a populist message of helping everyone is not enough. They have to show plans to actually get it done.
Progressives already know this, and they aren’t holding back. The Elizabeth Warren wing of the party is nearly pure in its message: it’s about the people, not the money.
The Tea Party? These ultra religious conservatives are showing the darkest part of our society. We needed to see this. Without seeing how low people can sink, we simply would never have known how much we must change to lift us all out of this mess. They will be the hardest to convince. They will scream about values while having the worst ones. They will fight, violently, to defend unfounded perceived notions that government is an oppressor. It will not be pretty, it is coming, and it will be very violent.
Which brings us back to Starfleet. Gene Roddenberry gave us a vision of what we can become. The Progressives are the start of the movement. They are tied with the BS Dems because it is the most logical place to be right now to begin the changes needed to unite people. They realize the BS Dems are not focused, but BS Dems can be focused if our current society shows signs of rising up for the good of the people. This is happening every day. With plenty of media fully available every day to show how bad things have become, more and more people are using our fully connected society to get mad. They are talking, they are uniting, they are coming together. We, the people, are mad as hell and we aren’t going to take this anymore.
We need to get focused. We need to be very vocal. We need to make our voices heard from the bottom to the top, and say very clearly that we are going to vote this time. We are going to the polls, and we will cast ballots for the candidates that actually reflect what we want. It’s incredibly simple: we want a society of people, not power. We do not want wars. Health care is a right, not a privilege. Senseless gun violence needs to stop. We ARE created equal, and it’s time to start living that way.
This is our chance. This is our chance to mobilize, vocalize, and move us in the right direction. Go ahead and “Like” this idea. Do NOT stop there. Vote. In the primaries, in the general election. Vote by going to businesses that value employees, shun the ones that don’t lift up society. Vote by telling BS Dems that they need to refocus. Tell them in person. Stand up, get outside, and go do something to actually steer the ship. If you can’t find a progressive candidate, become one.
We must start now. We must be united. I am reporting for duty, captain.
The Starfleet Party. Endorsing Bernie Sanders, for Captain.
