I was on my way back home from a day out with the family today and we were passing by the West Melbourne Police Department. If you are unfamiliar with the area West Melbourne, FL is a relatively small (9800-odd people in 10.2 sq mi) predominantly residential city West of Melbourne and North of Palm Bay. It is regarded locally as a bit of a speed trap (it and the small cities on the barrier islands). As I passed by I was a bit saddened but somewhat unsurprised to see a sign posted out front reading LEO Lives Matter. I am not all that surprised because I have live in this area most of my life. I know the kind of people who live here. A lot are decent but far too many are misinformed by Fox News and/or proud display a certain flag. You can find redneck, Confederate, and Trump t-shirts in the local flea market. The local cops train at the local college. ::Insert image of men in black uniforms goose stepping:: Not everyone is that bad to be sure but practically everyone here knows someone who is, whether they'll admit it or not. That saddens me sometimes. I try to base my opinions about people on individuals and it disturbs me when people can be so insensitive to needs and feeling of a group. The LEO Lives Matter sign is an excellent example of that. I least of anyone want to see someone, anyone, not even a cop, shot down. The shootings of cops while I does happen isn't near as common as civilians getting shot, be it by cop or by any one else. The local African Americans tend or be looked at suspiciously and targeted more often. I've seen worse in places like Orlando & Knoxville but it still doesn't make it any less of a crappy thing to do.
