Losers at NRA convention
Crazy.
There are nearly twice as many guns in the average gun-owning household today as there were 20 years ago, according to new Wonkblog estimates based data from surveys and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. In 2013, there were an estimated 8.1 firearms in the typical gun-owning household, according to these data. In 1994, the average gun-owning household owned 4.2 guns.
While the number of guns in the country is at an all-time high, the number of gun owners
is down. In other words, an increasing number of paranoid gun fetishists are stocking up on enough weaponry to equip an infantry squad.
And why? If the Big Bad Obama comes to take their guns away, do they hope those government jackbooted thugs miss the one gun stashed behind the air conditioner cover plate?
If it's about standing up to government tyranny, do they think their guns and assault rifles would be any more effective against the drone-carrying hellfire missiles that are blowing people to bits in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, and elsewhere? Is it about protecting their home, because one gun or even two isn't enough to stop ... a marauding army of burglars?
Or is it really about showing those liberals how no one will tell them to stop their gun worship? The National Rifle Association, now effectively a far-right militia group, certainly fans those flames, as they greatly benefit the gun manufacturers it ultimately represents.
Regardless, it's kinda pathetic and sad, isn't it? People so obsessed with their freedom death sticks that having one or two isn't enough to feed their paranoid conspiracy fantasies. It's high time these gun-stashing crazies (and their NRA representatives) are treated like the fringe that they are.
