The Clay County, Tennessee, Director of Schools announced that he was closing the county’s schools for the rest of the year, saying there was not enough money in the budget. “The straw that broke the camel's back,” he claimed, “was really the Affordable Care Act. . . . It has made it very difficult for us to have our employees properly covered and meet the mandates of the law.” Subsequently two parents sued, and the county chancellor ordered him to reopen classes.

“These Are Two of Our Favorite Things”
In Clay County, Tennessee,
A twofer for the GOP!
Sort of, as the phrase is known,
Killing two birds with one stone,
Two things they attack with zeal,
The one for show, the other for real.
They must think both bad for the nation:
Obamacare and education.
The ACA’s their whipping boy.
With unmitigated joy
The House keeps voting for repeal,
Knowing it has “base” appeal,
Acting as if they didn’t know
That no farther would it go,
Its Senate chances being iffy;
It’d be vetoed in a jiffy.
Just to vote gives them a stiffy,
Pretending they’ve the power to kill:
What a titillating thrill!
Fifty times or more they’ve tried;
Every time the bill has died.
But the pleasure’s in the trying,
Sighing, lying, speechifying.
More success by far they’ve won
In the damage they have done
To our schools. Perhaps their goal,
The better to exert control,
And retain the wealth they’ve got,
Is to keep the kids untaught.
Knowledge is power, which goes to show
That ignorance is strength, to those in the know.
In Oklahoma they tried to ban
AP History, as part of a plan
To outlaw the teaching of the truth
For fear it would corrupt their youth,
With news of crimes past generations
Committed on their slave plantations,
Or in the winning of the west
The massacres to be confessed.
Republicans show fierce defiance
When confronted with real science.
That climate change is made by man
Does not fit in with their plan
To keep on in their pursuit
Of the freedom to pollute.
In their Bible-based crusades
Faith as science masquerades.
Creationism takes the place
Of Darwin, cast out in disgrace.
“Evolution’s just a theory, kid.
The important thing is what God did.
Created earth in seven days,
And so to Him always give praise.
Adam gave each beast its name;
Since then the world has been the same,
Unchanged for ten thousand years,
Exactly like the heavenly spheres.”
With fabrications of that kind
It’s no surprise we fall behind
Nearly every other nation
In math and science education.
So Republicans surely danced with glee
At the news from Tennessee
Of the closing of schools there
All on account of Obamacare.
