Which states will gain seats in Congress come 2020, and which will lose? Here's a very early look, by David Beard
The page who took down the GOP by leaking the Mark Foley emails:
I was a congressional page in 2001 and 2002. During that year, Foley sent sexual instant messages to at least three of my classmates. The messages weren’t flirtatious—though some started that way—but out and out lewd. Two of those recipients continued to receive them well after their time in the page program had elapsed, extending into our college years. Many of us who were pages at the time knew that the conversations had taken place. Some of us even shared copies of the message logs among ourselves. But how the conversations went public, and who gave them to reporters and started the avalanche that ended Foley’s career and dealt a blow to the Republican congressional majority, has never come out.
It was me.

You don’t expect real journalism from Cracked, but here’s some on ISIS: It’s editorial manager Robert Evans piece titled “7 Things I Learned Reading Every Issue Of ISIS's Magazine.”
The difficulty we've had defeating ISIS suggests that, maybe, we don't really understand who and what the fuck they are. Everything we hear is filtered through politicians and pundits, each with their own agenda ("You know what ISIS is afraid of? Me, Donald Goddamned Trump!"). Fortunately, it turns out that finding out what ISIS wants is like finding out what a vegan eats: They'll tell you. Which is to say that ISIS has a magazine.
No, really. It's an actual glossy, full-color magazine called Dabiq, complete with feature articles and photo spreads. So, in the interest of understanding just what makes these violent lunatics tick, I read through 700-plus pages of this oddly well-put-together propaganda and learned ...
California state parks free on “Black Friday”:
For the first time this year, Save the Redwoods League is sponsoring free admission to 49 participating California redwood state parks on Nov. 27, billing the unprecedented event as “the best bargain you’re going to find this Black Friday.” Guests simply have to download a pass and present it at the park. California has the largest state park system in the United States. Minnesota state parks also are offering the same deal at 76 of its parks.
Study shows NC changing of polling sites hurts blacks: Just as Joan McCarter pointed out earlier Monday, some North Carolina officials seem determined to suppress the black vote:
Last year, North Carolina’s county election boards, which are controlled by Republicans, moved the location of almost one-third of the state’s early voting sites. Those changes, according tonew data analysis by a consulting firm that was shared with MSNBC, will significantly increase the distance African-Americans have to travel to vote early, while leaving white voters largely unaffected.
Why it takes two years for Syrian refugees to enter the United States:
Syrians must pass many layers of security checks before being admitted to the United States, a process that can take two years or longer. In most cases, the refugees do not enter the United States until the very end. They are also subject to an additional layer of checks beyond those for refugees of other nationalities; after the Paris attacks, the House voted to further tighten screening procedures. Since 2011, the United States has admitted fewer than 2,000 Syrian refugees.
Is gentrification caused by rich people looking for a shorter commute?
American Indians running for office show how it’s done in Montana:
It’s telling that when Brookings Institution researched the historical demographics for members of Congress it did not even bother to measure Native Americans. There are two tribal members currently serving in Congress and, so far, this election season, there are at least seven Native American candidates for Congress. Why is Montana the model? Hard work. Good candidates. And, litigation to enforce the Voting Rights Act.
On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Greg Dworkin rounds up polling & horse race news. Could Romney have won New Hampshire? Trump camp’s racism and xenophobia gets even worse, if you can believe that. Vitter vanquished. Hazy history, campus protests spill over, and the Civil War was about slavery. Sex slavery.
