It is becoming painful to watch the stunning level of ignorance and amateurishness displayed by the Republican field of presidential candidates. In the latest entry, here comes Marco Rubio to display his (mis)understanding of the Constitution, democratically enacted laws and the separation of Church and State:
“In essence, if we are ever ordered by a government authority to personally violate and sin — violate God’s law and sin — if we’re ordered to stop preaching the Gospel, if we’re ordered to perform a same-sex marriage as someone presiding over it, we are called to ignore that," Rubio said. "We cannot to abide by that because government is compelling us to sin."
“So when those two come into conflict, God’s rules always win,” he added.
Marco went on to describe Roe v. Wade as “current law; it’s not settled law. No law is settled” — repeating and winking at the new Republican meme that Republicans need not abide by any Supreme Court decision with which they “morally” disagree (you know, like Brown v. Board of Education).
The above ignorance would be appalling enough, but not as much as when you have Rubio and Republicans running around warning about the imposition of Sharia law across the U.S. by “sleeper” Muslim immigrants or refugees. It’s important to note that Republicans represent the actual threat that they purport to oppose.
I don’t remember which comedian said this, but Rubio really does look like a guy in a strip mall who should be trying to sell you home exercise equipment. I can’t believe the roster of mediocrities that the Republican party keeps throwing up as their presidential candidates.
