Hi everyone! For Thanksgiving I was visiting my inlaws at their newly constructed house in NH, which is absolutely gorgeous but does not have internet, so was pretty off the grid for a few days. I didn’t think I’d be back in the land of happy wifi until tomorrow so I am happy to be your diarist tonight! Skip on below the sponsor message with me!
Here at Top Comments we strive to nourish community by rounding up some of the site's best, funniest, most mojo'd & most informative commentary, and we depend on your help!! If you see a comment by another Kossack that deserves wider recognition, please send it either totopcomments at gmail or to the Top Comments group mailbox by 9:30pm Eastern. Please please please include a few words about why you sent it in as well as your user name (even if you think we know it already :-)), so we can credit you with the find!
I hope if you participated in American Thanksgiving yesterday you’ve recovered from the food coma! Casa Brillig avoided Black Friday, participating in purchasing only during a run to the grocery store for more of the reeeealllly good cheddar we had yesterday and then left in NH by mistake, and dish detergent, because somehow we used ALL of it. I’ve been assured my membership in the anti-consumer brigade is still intact because grocery stores don’t count. We slept in as long as one can in a newly constructed house that (a) lacks windowshades; and (b) is inhabited by both an 11 month old and his 28 month old brother, had a lazy breakfast, went and admired the deer my BIL hunted on his morning walk (he is an avid hunter and uses as much of each deer as is possible to use), and generally hung out til it was time to head home. K1 is working on college apps so had that, and both K1 and K2 got quality time with their cousins.
How did you spend your Friday? Have some leftover pie and come relax here tonite!
TONIGHT’S TOP COMMENTS!
Brillig's ObDisclaimer: The decision to publish each nomination lies with the evening's Diarist and/or Comment Formatter. My evenings at the helm, I try reeeeallllyy hard to publish everything without regard to content. I really do, even when I disagree personally with any given nomination. "TopCommentness" lies in the eyes of the nominator and of you, the reader - I leave the decision to you. I do not publish self-nominations (ie your own comments) and if I ruled the world, we'd all build community, supporting and uplifting instead of tearing our fellow Kossacks down.
From Steven Payne: Submitting this adorable comment by boran2 from last night's Top Comments diary.
From a2nite : This is an excellent comment from MargaretPOA in a diary with many good comments to the diarist whom is conservative about what to do about Trump.
Here’s the thing: YOU guys created the teabag party which turned your primary voters into Fascists and now they are clamoring for one of their own to get the nomination after suffering two defeats from a black man. YOU guys whipped up the anger and the eliminationist rhetoric, YOU guys fostered the hate, the misogyny, the racism, the homophobia, the over the top fake patriotism, the FOX “News” inspired disconnect with any bit of reality that doesn’t support the conservative ideology. YOU guys are the sole reason why YOU have a Trump problem right now. Most of US pointed out what you were doing during your ill considered rush to create this monster and you scoffed. Most of US tried to warn you what the likely result would be. YOU guys went on cable news and called us names and laughed and pointed at the ridiculous hippies and liberals who are doing their Chicken Little impression. You have only ever ignored, ridiculed, catcalled, threatened, dismissed, scoffed at, rejected and lied when the very few people in the media that lean left have attempted to speak about this to the country at large. You’ve lied with impunity, disregarded empirical reality and bullied the media into making sure there was a “he said/she said”, “both sides do it” false equivalency attached to everything. When your economic policy failed, it was because of the liberals, even when there isn’t one remotely involved. You’ve tried to sabotage a President and everything he’s done. You’ve broken the law, went outside the Constitution, ignored laws you don’t like, all the while trying to delegitimize a sitting President because you were pissed you didn’t win.
And now it’s up to US to clean up your frigging mess? Try again, Pal. One thing I’m certain of is that Trump is going to lose a general election and badly. So badly in fact that it will make the Republican Party a laughingstock and entirely discredit conservative philosophy for at least a generation. And you deserve it. I’m looking forward to that with gleeful anticipation. After all the damage you’ve done to our culture, our society, our sciences, our race relations, the climate and foreign relations, you deserve this and more. Suddenly after years of demonizing and dismissing us we’re all in this together because the monster YOU created has broken loose and is terrorizing the Village? How many times have we told you the same thing, only to be mocked?
I will do this for you though, I’ll never vote for Trump. But get lost with your plea for help. He’s your monster. YOU kill him.
From TrueBlueMajority: sort of a reverse Niemöller, an excellent observation by cardinal in response to a conservative troll diary asking progressives for help in dealing with The Donald.
I have more sympathy for the predicament of “thinking conservatives” than most here. I teach poli sci at one of Texas’ top private universities, so my modal student is a high-achieving, thoughtful, open-minded conservative.
But, to paraphrase many others upthread, you built that. Put another way:
When the Southern Strategy began, you said nothing because it helped the party.
When Rush Limbaugh and his hundreds of clones brought a dumbed-down, authoritarian-personality streak to the conservative movement, you said nothing because it helped the party.
When Newt Gingrich and his revolutionaries brought a harder edge to Congress, you said nothing because it helped the party.
When Fox News brought the talk-radio ethic to TV, you said nothing because it helped the party.
When the most recent electoral cycles brought anti-institutional, anti-governing warriors to Congress that made even Gingrich blush, you said nothing because it helped the party.
Finally -- and this is the big one for me because this is the topic I study for a living: when the commercial media devolved slowly into celebrity-obsessed infotainment, all you did was whine about liberal bias instead of uniting with thoughtful critics who worried about the real biases in the informational content of political news.
And now Trump is the problem? He’s just the inevitable manifestation of the above factors. I’m surprised it didn’t happen sooner.
