It may seem to the casual observer that Donald Trump is tapping into a deep well of uneducated, low IQ bigots. We’ve seen them on the news, fawning over his word salad pronouncements and claiming he “tells it like it is”.
But exactly how uneducated you may ask? Well, the data from a recent YouGov poll doesn’t look good. From Newsweek:
The demographics of Trump voters are interesting. Slightly over half of Trump supporters are female, about half are between 45 and 64 years of age with another 34 percent being over 65 years old and less than two percent younger than 30. One half of his voters have a high school education or less compared to 19 percent with a college or post-graduate degree. Slightly over one third of his supporters earn less than $50,000 per year while 11 percent earn over $100,000 per year.
One half of his voters have a high school education. One fifth finished college. Most are poor, earning less than $50K per year. Other polls paint a similar picture:
“Trump’s support is heavily concentrated among non-college educated Republicans and those who only lean Republican and thus are less inclined to show up and vote in primaries and caucuses,” Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia’s Center for Politics said via email.
So really, Trump’s support comes from mainly older, non-college educated Republicans who are less likely to vote in primaries and caucuses. That should hopefully provide a glimmer of light in an otherwise very dark Trump news cycle.
