House Republicans aren't going to let any little thing like an indictment of anti-abortion extremists stop them from "investigating" the "crimes" Planned Parenthood has repeatedly been proven not to have committed. Nope, even though the only actionable law-breaking found in this whole manufactured fetal tissue scandal is on the anti-choice side, Republicans remain committed to flushing even more millions of taxpayer dollars down the hole of non-existent scandals.
The grand jury’s decision hasn’t affected Republicans' plans to continue investigating Planned Parenthood, however. Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), who is chairing a select investigative committee that purports to be investigating “big abortion providers"—but for all intents and purposes is only scrutinizing Planned Parenthood—said in a statement Tuesday that "the mission of our investigation has not changed.
"We will continue to gather information and get the facts about medical practices of abortion service providers and the business practices of the procurement organizations who sell baby body parts," Blackburn said. "These are issues of importance to the American people. We will study the laws on the books and follow the facts to defend life."
Blackburn's committee was created even as other Republicans, like Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), said they didn’t find any evidence of wrongdoing on the provider’s part. Multiple state investigations have come to similar conclusions.
There's no selling of baby body parts happening, and in fact David Daleiden—the anti-abortion extremist who cooked up and carried out the smear campaign of fake videos against Planned Parenthood—has thus far been the only person attached to this supposed scandal who's been charged with trying to traffic in human organs. That's one of the two charges for which the Texas grand jury indicted him.
Other anti-abortion extremists have now decided that the criminal investigation was biased against them, despite the fact that it was "initiated by a Republican lieutenant governor and led by an anti-abortion Republican district attorney." That's just a tad inconvenient for them, but these people are never going to let anything like inconvenient facts get in their way.
As of November, the other totally-political special investigative committee in the House—the Benghazi committee—had wasted more than $5 million in taxpayer money. It looks like they're prepared to waste at least another $5 million on this one.
