Texas Sen. John Cornyn, Mitch McConnell's number two in Senate leadership, is fretting about the prospects of Donald Trump at the top of this fall's ballot.
"We can't have a nominee be an albatross around the down-ballot races," Cornyn told CNN when asked if he was worried about Trump becoming the nominee. "That's a concern of mine."
CNN asked Cornyn if Trump could negatively impact Republicans' re-election chances.
"I think he certainly is a controversial figure. I think we need someone who can unify the party, as opposed to divide the party," the senator responded, according to CNN.
That's Cornyn explaining why Republicans are going to be running against their presidential nominee this year. It's also Cornyn engaging in some wishful thinking. Maybe there will be a white knight riding to their rescue in a brokered convention? Maybe no one will notice that Donald Trump is running as a Republican? And maybe voters won't connect the dots and see that Republican senators are setting the stage for Trump to remake the Supreme Court.
"It's always important for candidates," Cornyn said, "to be in tune with your state and not necessarily what's happening in Washington." Yeah, that'll work.
