In perhaps one of the great speeches of this century, President Obama passionately makes the case for taking care of our own to an audience of the citizens of Flint, with Michigan Governor Snyder in the house. This is 50 minutes long, not sound bite material, not the most poetic speech, not in the manner of Martin Luther King. It can't compete with the flamboyance of Donald Trump mocking women, minorities and the disabled, so I doubt it will be making the nightly news, but the standing ovation at 40:20 is testament to its effectiveness and power. In an ironic bit of improv, at 19:45 the President asks for some water, which takes about 4 minutes to arrive. Obama, goes completely off script but makes his point that it is time to change the "culture of neglect", the idea "that somehow there is an us or them”, but rather “there is just one big we". 50 minutes of your time — it is so worth it.
