Many have asked about my position on what type of federal income tax we should have, and if we should have a "Flat Tax." I'd like to take a moment to set the record straight.
During my first campaign in 2014, I was open to a Flat Tax system with the rate starting at $70- to $80,000 per year. I thought that this would shield the poor and less fortunate from the regressive effects of pure Flat Tax system.
I was wrong about this, and have learned a lot since then. In retrospect, this type of system would hurt many of the working poor who rely on programs like the Earned-Income Tax Credit to get by. It would also place an undue burden on many middle class families, shifting the tax burden further onto them and away from the wealthy.
I support a graduated, progressive federal income tax system, and have always believed that we should be judged as a society based on how we treat the least fortunate among us. If I am elected to Congress, I will work to ensure that we maintain our progressive tax system. It is a moral necessity that ensures fairness and promotes equality of opportunity.
