• Popular herbicide hurts animals, probably including us humans:
Atrazine, the second most commonly used herbicide in the United States, is mainly used to control weeds in the corn blanketing much of the Midwest. The chemical also routinely turns up in streams and drinking water. And according to a new Environmental Protection Agency preliminary risk assessment, it may be doing serious harm to fish, animals, and amphibians, even at extremely low exposure levels. [...]
In the areas where it is most commonly used, mainly the Midwestern corn belt, atrazine turns up in the environment at rates that exceed established levels of concern "by as much as 22, 198, and 62 times for birds, mammals, and fish, respectively," the report concluded.
• China wants to build a deep-sea “space station”: Not a lot is known about Beijing’s plans in this regard. Included in its latest five-year economic plan is the construction of an oceanic base and deep sea exploration, which is a high priority of China’s Scientific Innovation 2030 initiative. The station would sit 9,800 feet below the surface of the South China Sea, an area of territorial dispute and occasional military tensions between China and the United States. The station would provide a base for offshore mining, according to a Chinese Science Ministry presentation viewed by Bloomberg.
• Sierra Club endorses Hillary Clinton:
Today, the Sierra Club enthusiastically endorsed Secretary Hillary Clinton for president. Throughout the primary, Clinton has listened to the environmental movement’s call to protect our public lands, address environmental injustices, and continue to expand the clean energy revolution -- and she has responded with detailed plans that will build on our movement’s victories and President Obama’s legacy. [...]
This endorsement is by no means the end to our engagement, nor is it an endorsement of every Clinton policy and proposal. Just as we have for the past eight years with President Obama, we will stand with a President Clinton on some issues, while pushing her to be stronger on others. When we do disagree, we will stand in principled opposition to our next president.
• On today’s Kagro in the Morning show, Arliss Bunny relieves the stress of yelling at her “radio” with a follow-up to our Social Security talk. Darwin Mesadieu reports from FL on Rick Scott & loathsome diseases Zika & Donald Trump. Turns out Trump’s “great deals” are really just about stiffing creditors.
