It's Wednesday, July 6 and Day 144 since Justice Antonin Scalia died and Mitch McConnell laid down his Supreme Court blockade: No meetings, no hearings, no votes on his replacement. It's also Day 107 since President Obama named Merrick Garland to be Scalia's replacement. What's the Senate doing today instead of considering the Supreme Court nominee?
It's all about fake immigration reform today, or "throw Pat Toomey a bone" day. They'll start considering the Pennsylvania Republican's "sanctuary cities" bill, which he's trying to make a campaign issue. Rather than doing anything about immigration, the bill would, as Minority Leader Harry Reid said this morning, "follow Trump's lead in demonizing and criminalizing immigrant Latino families."
He's going to try to make lemonade from this, however, and is challenging Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to have the open amendment process that he's been promising since taking control of the Senate.
The Republican leader said he wants a robust amendment process. Well, we'll be happy to give him one. We'll have a number of amendments on guns. We'll have a number of amendments on Zika, and we'll do something about comprehensive immigration reform. So we're going to take a look at that. […] We're happy to do that. This may be an opportunity for us to move forward on those issues.
Just watch how fast McConnell shuts that open amendment process down.
