Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson has had a complicated, on-again, off-again relationship with Donald Trump and the Republican National Convention. Apparently it's sort of on-again, for a little while. And with some confusion as to what he's actually there to talk about.
Johnson, who is engaged in a tough re-election fight against former Sen. Russ Feingold (D-WI), will deliver a speech on Tuesday, according to the updated speaker list revealed by the Republican National Committee on Sunday. Tuesday's theme will be "Make America Work Again," and Johnson's bio on the speaker list notes that the senator "is focused on reining in government spending and bringing jobs back to the people of Wisconsin
However, Johnson's staff says his speech will focus on national security, as he is the chair of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee.
Chances are pretty good that RNC officials didn't actually tell him what he was speaking about, as the whole event is seemingly being held together with spit and baling wire. But, hey, they managed to secure an actual live, breathing, U.S. senator! Even if he's not one of the sharpest knives they've got.
He is, however, smart enough to be planning a quick getaway from Cleveland, with his spokesman stressing that Johnson "will only be at the convention for a short period of time." Certainly long enough to provide some good ad fodder for Russ Feingold.
