In chronological order, the three moments that made tonight:
1. Bernie Sanders moves to nominate Hillary Clinton by acclamation
By the end of the primary process, my frustration with Bernie Sanders was clear. “From now on,” I thought, “I’m going to call every sore loser a ‘Bernie Sanders’!” It’s amazing how so much ill-will and frustration can be washed away with a simple, classy gesture.
I watched that clip so many times I lost count. All of it was awesome. And even the impotent protests of a tiny minority of his delegates couldn’t mar that incredible, indelible moment.
2. The mothers
This was a moment everyone wishes didn’t need to be a moment.
Trayvon Martin’s mother said, “I am an unwilling participant in this movement.” None of them wanted to be on that stage, but their poise and eloquence in the face of unspeakable grief … I’m tearing up just thinking about it.
3. Bill Clinton
The explainer-in-chief was in full force tonight, making the case that Hillary might’ve been around a long time, but every minute of that was spent trying to make people’s lives better.
Another night full of pride for my party, my people, my country. Whatever the fuck the GOP did last week doesn’t hold a candle to who and what we represent. I’m fired up and ready to go, and yeah, that was Obama’s catchphrase, but I think it applies just as well this week.
